Endorsement: Endorse diversity champion, Hoan Huynh for Illinois' 5th Congressional District.

Event: Co-organized virtual townhall on Challenging Asian Hate, Allyship and the Path Forward (May 19, 2021) with Margaret Huang, Southern Poverty Law Center; Connie Chung Joe, Asian Americans Advancing Justice - LA; Sonal Shah, The Asian American Foundation.


2020

Endorsement and Candidate Focus: Supported diversity champion Gina Ortiz Jones, Texas’ 23rd district. Hosted virtual reception and fundraiser for candidate.  Joined phone banks for candidate and promoted other campaign events.

Call to action: Supported Georgia democratic challenges for U.S. Senate, Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock. Wrote letters and phone banked to register voters. 

Call to action: Wrote letters to voters in Texas to help flip Texas and elect diversity champions to Congress. 

Call to action: Amplified efforts to Get Out the Count for Census 2020 to ensure fair representation.

Event: Screened award-winning documentary, Rigged the Voter Suppression Playbook, exposing the nefarious tactics used to suppress the vote and discussion on actions needed to protect democracy.  Organized panel discussion (virtual) with representatives from Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and Sierra Club; event introduced by candidate Gina Ortiz Jones.  Over 100 participants.


2019

 

Endorsement: Canvassed and campaigned for diversity champion Josh Cole, Virginia’s House District 28,who tipped the balance and helped flip the entire Virginia legislature.

Endorsement:  Canvassed and campaigned for diversity champion, Qasim Rashid in Senate District Virginia’s 28th district.


2018

 

Endorsement and Candidate Focus: Campaigned for Andy Kim, New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District and the state’s first Asian-American Congressman. Dozens of Diversity Matters’ volunteers helped get out the vote for Andy, knocking on hundreds of doors, mailing over 550 postcards, and making phone calls to voters in New Jersey’s 3rd congressional district.  Diversity Matters joined the host committee for Andy Kim’s last big event in Washington, D.C. 

Event: Fundraised for Ella Baker Youth Leadership Program, established by Virginia Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy, to help diverse high school students get first-hand experience with political leaders and the legislature to imagine their future roles in the political life of this country. 

Partnership: Joined other organizations in signing onto letters sent by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies to Senator Menendez, recently reinstated as Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Senator Cardin, recently appointed Ranking Member on the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Letters urged Senators to commit to hiring diverse candidates. 


2017

 

Endorsement and Candidate Focus:  Campaigned for six outstanding individuals running for state legislature in Virginia. They have all made public commitments to stand up for the principles of the Diversity Declaration, and are matching their actions to their words. Canvassed for Hala Ayala, John Bell, Jennifer Carroll Foy, Elizabeth Guzman, Danica Roem and Kathy Tran.  

Partnership: Our combined efforts with the Virginia Leadership Institute helped several Diversity Pipeline Pledge champions take seats in the Virginia General Assembly. The Virginia Leadership Institute’s goal is to increase the number of African-American elected and appointed officials. 

Call to Action: Supported equality for gay and transgender people through the National Center for Transgender Equality

Call to Action:  Supported GOTV events for Alabama’s special election for Senator Doug Jones

Event: Candidate Forum - co-sponsored a Candidate Forum for all Maryland gubernatorial candidate with United for Maryland.
